STANDARD CONTRACT

We have nothing to hide in our contract, and we encourage authors to look it over before submitting a manuscript.

POETRY CONTRACT

The following information serves as terms and conditions for publication, and submission of work assumes acceptance of these terms. We suggest that you print this page and retain it for your records.

  • Submissions will typically be between 45-110 pages.
  • All poetry titles are in 6"x9" format.
  • The work will be released in print and ebook formats unless stated otherwise.
  • You can include a Foreword, Introduction, etc.
  • You can organise your poems into Chapters / Sections, or just run concurrently - the choice is yours.
  • Our house style is to start poems that span more than one page on the left page, and for this reason we may move poems around slightly - let us know in advance if any poems need to remain in a certain order.
  • Titles retail up to £8.99, although work over 110 pages may be more.
  • We may use extracts of your work to promote your book, and that of the Wordcatcher poetry range in general.
  • We will consult with you on a front cover, but the final decision is ours, and cover designs will fit into our house style.
  • We proofread your work for typos, however we anticipate that you have crafted each and every word, so we are unlikely to make word changes. We will consult with you on the degree of proofreading required, and we work together to put together the best book possible.
  • Typically, we have 2-3 rounds of revisions, so when you receive a manuscript for review please read it through carefully on each instance.
  • You will have the opportunity to approve the final version.
  • This is an exclusive publishing contract - it does not assign copyright to us, only a right to publish your work.

  • We only want rights for ebook and print editions, and in English. You retain all other publishing rights. If we add other formats or languages we will approach you with an offer and add it to our agreement. Until then, we believe it's wrong to take rights for formats we don't market.

  • This agreement may limit your ability to post your work on Facebook, blogs, etc, as you need to seek confirmation from us prior to any such publication.

  • This work is original and your own, and you indemnify us against any challenge to its publication. In the event of publishing work that infringes on a third party's rights, you further agree to pay Wordcatcher £150 compensation for each occurrence. We take copyright seriously, whoever it belongs to, and this is to disuade authors from plagarism.

  • Just to be clear, there is no charge for publishing your poetry in this series, or buy a minimum number of copies. We do, however, expect you to get involved in marketing your book, and to be prepared to spend money on this activity.

Our Schedule for Publication

  • We aim to publish two poetry titles per month, so we are limited to twenty-four poetry titles per year.

  • Please allow four weeks for us to respond to your submission - after that time you are welcome to contact us to track its progress.

  • Publication day will generally be on a Wednesday, although this need not be the day you have a book launch. We are marketing Wordcatcher Wednesdays for poetry and creative portfolio titles.

  • Publication date will depend on current workload, significant dates in the calendar, and existing releases.

  • It is up to you to arrange any book launches, we do not have the resources to do this for you.

Royalties

  • Our terms are 50/50 split on net royalties received from whatever source.
  • You receive up to 40% off RRP for personal stock (no royalty is due and you can sell at any price up to the RRP).
  • We pay royalties twice per year.

Previously Published Content

If any of your work has been previously published you will need to advise us of when and where this was, so we can make a judgement on whether we want to publish it in the collection. You must have the legal right to publish this work with us. If there were conditions attached to any prior publication we need to know what they were. If you are unsure, please ask and we can discuss.

Marketing

You are committing to marketing your book. We do not have a budget to market individual poetry titles, but we do put resources into building an audience for our poetry collection as a whole, and you will be expected to put effort into this as well. Marketing your book is a joint effort, and you may sell more books than we do. We want to work with authors who are committed to selling books.

How to Submit

  • We only accept submissions using this form - please complete it carefully and as fully as possible.
  • We will reject poorly written or incomplete submissions.
  • You must submit a single MS Word document with each poem starting on a new page, and in your desired order.
  • Please separate poems using page breaks, not blank lines.
  • Name the manuscript file in the format - book title v1 XX.doc - replacing XX with your intitials.
  • Email your manuscript to admin@wordcatcher.com, using the title of the book as the subject line.
  • You need to complete the Author Bio Form and Book Cover Design Form and we welcome these at the same time you submit this form as it gives us more information upon which to base our decision.

CREATIVE PORTFOLIO CONTRACT

The terms and conditions for publication are as follows:

  • There is no charge to you, the contributor, for publication, and no requirement that you buy any stock.
  • You receive 30% of the net royalties received, from whatever source they come.
  • You can purchase stock at 30% off the RRP (excluding p&p)
  • All titles are of the same physical format - please don't ask for 'just a little change'. They are all 8.5"x8.5" or 216mm x 216mm, 24 pages (you have 22 pages as the first two pages are title and rights pages).
  • This is not a sales catalogue - we won't print prices or overtly sales-related copy. This is a series of portfolios to showcase your talent, so by all means include contact details.
  • They may be printed in either full colour, or all black and white, as appropriate.
  • You either send us content in the order you want it (clearly numbered sequentially),OR send us a selection of your work and we'll decide what to do with it.
  • There are no revision rounds, so please check your work thoroughly. You will receive a PDF proof for your information.
  • This publication is non-exclusive - that means you can publish content elsewhere, however we ask that you don't publish substantially identical works (e.g. 50% or greater the same),as this erodes the possibility of sales. As a courtesy, we would expect you to tell us if you are publishing parts of this work elsewhere - partly so we can share the news!
  • Publication is likely to be within 26 weeks of your final submission of all components of your title. We cannot be held to this schedule as it will depend on workload, but it's in our interests to get it out there for you as quickly as possible. Once we start on your title we move quickly.
  • Artwork must either be precisely sized to 219mm x 219mm to allow for bleed, or you accept that we will typeset as we see appropriate - this may involve scaling your image (always proportionately),or adding a border or frame if it is not possible to re-size or bleed the image.
  • Images must be of print quality 300dpi or greater and CMYK - we will reject images that, in our opinion, will not print to a high enough quality - at which point you will be required to send a higher-resolution version, or a replacement. If we receive images in RGB we will convert them to CMYK. We cannot be held responsible for colour variances due to this conversion.
  • If you do not have a suitable image for the cover, we will provide one without charge, based on our opinion of what will look the best, in consultation with you, and using licenced images we have at our disposal.
  • You confirm that all of the work you submit is original, your own, and does not infringe on any one else's rights. Any successful challenge to your publication by a third party will result in a charge of £250 per occurrence. We take copyright seriously, whoever it belongs to. In addition, you will be liable to settle with the copyright holder direct.

This page constitutes the terms of our contract, and you are deemed to have accepted these terms, and to be bound by the law in England and Wales if you submit work for consideration.
