Nigel A Adams TD VR Dip. CII STI ABIBA MLIA Dip. FCIFA Nigel was born in the small village of Dinas Powys, just outside Cardiff, in 1964. He attended the local Church in Wales primary school and comprehensive. He was not particularly academic but loved working with his hands and gained a scholarship to the Ship Building Industry Training Board (SITB) in Southampton.
After a year completing his City and Guilds in Boatyard Joinery he returned home to look for a full-time job. After writing over a 100 applications with no success, he joined his father in the family firm in 1981 as a stop-gap, Peter Adams Insurance Brokers, whilst he continued his search for a job in joinery or boat building. Having grown up with it from birth, it wasn’t long before Nigel started to find the industry fascinating and even though he was then offered a job in boat building, he decided to stay in financial services. Nigel found the people, the situations, the businesses, their needs, the problems and solving them, endlessly interesting. He also became a director in his father’s business at the age of 24.
Over the coming years Nigel qualified with a Diploma in Insurance (Dip. CII) and was elected to the Society of Technicians in Insurance (STI), became an Associate of the British Insurance Brokers Association (ABIBA), qualified as an IFA and became a Member of the Life Insurance Association by examination (MLIA Dip.) He was also elected as an Associate and then a Fellow of the Corporation of Insurance and Financial Advisers (ACIFA, FCIFA) and served on the local South Wales BIBA committee, where he was the president for two consecutive years. Nigel was appointed to the Small Business Advisory Board of the British Insurance Brokers Association in 2018.
With over 37 years in insurance, starting as a motor clerk, Nigel has worked his way up through all the technical levels of personal and commercial insurance and was an IFA for over 10 years, before deciding to concentrate on corporate risk management. After a merger he became, “Director of Insurance Service” for the NG Insurance Group and when that was sold in 2008, he took up a position with HIGOS, on the senior management board. In November 2010 Nigel was itching to build something new and started Severn Bay Corporate Solutions with his wife Karen, in Cardiff. Its mission is to deliver: “A First Class, Risk Management and Insurance Service, that Exceeds Expectations and Delivers Real Value over the Long Term.” The model is 100% fee based, so it avoids any perceived commission related conflicts. It covers all forms of commercial insurance and risk management, from small package business, up to international businesses with turnovers in excess of £100 Million. It is at this level that Severn Bay operates. That mission and Nigel’s passion continue to this day.
In 1984 Nigel joined the Royal Regiment of Wales (RRW) as a reserve soldier. He was commissioned at RMAS Sandhurst in 1993. He retired from the Royal Welsh in 2014 when he was a Brigade Staff Officer, at a time of his own choosing. Nigel served in all major European NATO ally countries and across the world. During those 30 years he was awarded the Territorial Decoration (TD) and the Volunteer Reserve Service Medal (VRSM).
